A 70-year-old Utah woman has been released from jail after being arrested for failing to water her lawn and refusing to give a police officer her name. A police officer enforcing Orem, Utah's nuisance ordinance against neglected yards (it's unclear which ordinance might cover the roughing-up of little old ladies) knocked on Betty Perry's door a couple of day's ago and she opened up to see what was going on. Big mistake. |
| Betty was keeping mum because she "didn't want to tell him anything until I talked to a lawyer or my son. I wanted to see what he'd tell me to do. I've never had any experience before with the law ever in my life." When the officer began to write her a ticket, she attempted to go back into her house- that's when the cop decided Perry was a clear menace to society. In the ensuing (presumably low-speed) scuffle, Perry tripped on her steps, scraped her nose and elbows, and left blood on her door, porch, and clothes (none, unfortunately, made it to the parched yard). Perry was handcuffed, fingerprinted, and sat in a cell for over an hour until police higher-ups found out about the situation and released her immediately. Probably not looking to give to the Police Benevolent Association anytime soon, Perry had this to say, "Don't ever say no when the police tell you do to something. You better do what they tell you no matter what. Even if you don't have anybody to help you, you've got to do what they tell you or they will hurt you." Now that's a septagenarian who's quick on the uptake. | Local New Story | |
